Dear Colleagues, The response was overwhelming for this request. I started thanking each one personally, but I could not keep up with the bulk. Please forgive me for this group thank you. Many of the ideas were the same. Here is a condensed hit of ideas and suggestions that some of you requested since you're going through the same experience. Ask the school guidance counselor, other teachers, and parents for suggested titles. Suggestions for starting: Display the section near the door for more visibility. Advertise the section in school and media newsletters. Ask community organizations for pamphlets. Check out the public library's collection. Ask the PTA for funding so you won't have to use money from the general media budget. Suggested titles: Books on teaching reading, math, etc. that support the way subjects are taught in your school. 1-2-3 Magic - a book and video that is a method for gaining control of your child discipline-wise. Parenting - for all ages, from birth up. Reviving Ophelia (parenting) Siblings without rivalry Homework without tears Books with car games, party games, cooperative games Storytelling ideas Short story anthologies to read to kids Historical books related to community Internet information and safety Family nutrition Helping kids through divorce, death, step-parenting, new babies, etc. Trelease's "Read Aloud Handbook," "Great Books for Boys," "Great Books for Girls," etc. [Trelease was mentioned frequently] Notebook of school newsletters Copies of the curriculum, policies, etc. Books for talking to your kids about drugs, sex, violence, etc. Special Ed. titles for parents with children who are LD, dyslexic, ADD/ADHD, BEH, etc. [contact Special Ed. coordinator for suggested titles] Barbara Coloroso's (sp?) video and audio tapes on parenting Sing-along music (like Raffi) Magazines such as Sesame Street Parents, Family PC, Parenting, etc. "Mom's guide to over 500 videos to watch with your children" Books for parents on learning styles, multiple intelligences, etc. Books on dealing with bullies, adoption (Berenstain Bears "Bully" book suggested) Stages of pregnancy for expectant parents (What to expect when you're expecting, what is "normal" at different stages) Websites to visit with your child (keep it updated) Three resources to use right away: Channing L.
