Elem: guidlines for children choosing their own books

Hello all,
        *a new school year...more new questions!  Does anyone know of a
handy listing of criteria for children doing self-selection of books that I
could give to 5th graders?  The teachers are concerned about students
consistently choosing books that are too easy or too difficult.  TIA
