Janet, Why can't 2nd graders learn library skills along with the 3rd? I don't think they're too young--I do library skills with K-G! You could do peer tutoring or cooperative learning group lessons...maybe have pairs (of one older and one younger) do your picture book contest lesson, then expand that by using that book and learning its location on the shelves, or how to look up that book, or discover together what the title page information means. Thinking of them more as one group might yield surprising results. Just a thought...
