Here is what we are doing... and trying and tweaking as we make progress.
Please send me your comments, and I will continue to build this. Consider
this JUST a foundation!

Sequence Variety:
A. We made up 5 different sequences composed of: birthdays today, menu,
special feature, news, sports, fyi, trivia, favorite web sites (student and
teacher), etc. and for each day of the week we slightly alter the sequence.
Sequence sheet pre-printed and posted for daily reference.

General Content:
B. We use the following two sources for daily prompts and trivia:
1. "A Prompt A Day" by Jackqueline Sweeney, a Scholastic publication.
2. Chase's Calendar of Events, 1999

C. Each morning, we send ONE student out with our digital camera to take
pictures of the day. Cafeteria, halls, admin area, gym. buses, etc. If they
take about 10 pics, we have enough time to alter the photos for a slide
show display (PhotoDeluxe then AppleWorks application, scroll on closed
circuit TV all day, silent). This is fun, but behavior has to be watched!

D. We get monthly lists from our MIS and Cafeteria for student birthdays
and menu offerings.

E. We are considering buying some birthday stuff (hats, horns, confetti)
and making a visual ad (video clip) while announcing names.

F. If we are featuring a lab (computer or science, etc.) we go into the
lab and film. Then edit and play the tape as part of the news.

G. The digital camera goes to lots of classes to get in-room shots of what
is going on. This is a big plus. . .

H. We add in clips of video footage from school events:
Open House, sports, hallway, bus area, etc.

I. Our district is particpating in the Character Counts initiative, so we
will always:
-announce the character trait for that month
-read a new quote relevant to that topic (trustworthiness, integrity,
honesty, etc.)
-try to find a student/teacher who has acted out that trait.

Student Staff Management
On a white board, I list all the participating students names down one
column. Then I make a grid across the top with all the possible jobs for
that week. Jobs could be: anchor 1, anchor 2, camera 1, camera 2, digital
roving person, music, switcher/mixer, scroll news, director, special
feature. I use dates in the grid so I can keep track of who does what, and
when, and fairly rotate students (about 8) through on a 9 week plan.

Last Request: Send me your ideas. . . I will continue to build this and
respond with subsequent hits in numerical order.
