Good question! Materials such as reference books which are expensive,
we offer to a school we connected to through the state library
association. When we update something, they are offered our older (but
still usable and not really badly out of date) edition. They are also
offered copies of fiction when we cull extra copies. If something is
really out of date so as to be meaningless or misleading, it goes in the
dumpster, identifying materials removed. If we don't want our kids to
have it, we shouldn't subject other kids to it either. That's just
dumping your junk on someone else. I've gotten over my previous
abhorrence to "throwing away books." Now, we often take books home and
put them, a few at a time, in our own trash lest others, who still
adhere to
the "never throw a book away" theory, get upset.
