I was once bothered by the encouragement my principal gave our teachers to create classroom libraries . Realized it was partly an ego problem on my part - knowing I was better qualified to make the selections. Later I was glad students took books from anywhere as long as they read. And that's where skills of a librarian can be utilized! Offer to go into the classrooms and do a few booktalks with the books that are on the teacher's shelves. I feel it is important to keep our credibility as readers' advisors. Do all you can to encourage students to ask you for book recommendations. Your budget does seem like a real problem. Getting more funding is another issue.
