When we started encouraging students to come get a new book as soon as they were through with ones they had, we eliminated the problem at our K-2 school. I have an aide and we have 350 students so we are trying to eliminate the idea that you only come to the library during your classtime. If a child is doing research, they may take out more than the 2 that we usually hold to. Right before vacations we let them take out 5 or 6 and they are ecstatic. We stopped having so many overdues as soon as we quit talking about the "rules' of how long they can have a book. "As soon as you are done enjoying it, bring it back for someone else to read it!" we tell them if they ask how long they can have it. Parents are informed through newsletters that our automated computer program will generate overdue notices after 2 weeks. What a relief it has been to not spend any time on this anymore!
