In NY you used to be able to 'read for the bar' and become an
attorney without a legal degree. There was also a time (not too long
ago) when you could 'read for the med boards' and become an MD
without going to medical school.

Librarianship is still trying to figure out what the profession really is.
Training and education as a librarian can take you to unexpected
places and have you doing unexpected things. I"m doing things on
my job that were unheard of when I was in library school and I'm
working with products that were called science fiction by well-
known people in the field.

In time, people will recognize that the bigger attractant for librarians
is information and not just books.
