Dear Friends,

It has been interesting watching this thread. My policies are very similar to
many of yours: we restrict K &1st to 1 book, 2nd to 2 books, 3rd and up to 3
books plus anything needed for a class report. Students are allowed to return
books during the week for replacements. We are on a fixed schedule

We follow these guidelines for many reasons: teaching responsibilities, cutting
down on lost book fines, clerical overload, etc. This is what works for me and
for my district. What I want to remind everyone is that there is no "right" or
"wrong" answer here. We all use the system that we think is beneficial to
school. It has been interesting to see the different policies listed. It
definitely makes a difference if you're on a fixed schedule with 38 classes and
no help as opposed to being on an open schedule with a full time aide.

I'm on jury duty this week and have had time to catch up on my reading while
waiting to be impaneled. There is an excellent article in the current (12/6/99)
New Yorker (sorry no online text available) on what happens to e-mail once it's
sent from one computer. As a person who teaches Internet classes and a regular
e-mailer, I was fascinated.

Hope you all have a good day as I go off today to decide the fate of a
defendant. In case you were wondering, teachers in NJ are not exempt from jury
duty. Very few people are. There is a law enforcement official in my jury pool
and he is not exempt.

Jo
