Well, yes, you did touch a hot spot indeed. I can understand your
bitterness especially about being replaced by an aide, but also take insult
at your statement of not participating to requests by "aides" on this list.
I obviously, I am an aide but also have two study halls.
Our librarian who I work under is absolutely the best and very professional.
I respect her for the knowledge that she carries with her 30 some years of
being a librarian. She has taught and continues to teach me so much about
library skills, students, the world of books, etc. I don't want her job, the
responsibility of the position itself. Very detailed work involved with
years of experience to keep things running smoothly and efficiently. . I
so enjoy checking books in, helping students check books out, helping
students and teachers with research.
Exploited by schools? The person who has the position can certainly leave
the position if she/he feels exploited. Low pay? Well, yes, I do make
minimum wage but we are in a rural area and it has its pay offs also, a five
minute drive to work, same hours as my children, being involved in the world
of books and learning and reading. Since I was on the school board before I
resigned to take the aide position, I am aware of our librarian's salary. I
do not have the specific college skills or experience that would warrant pay
the same as hers.
I wanted to say that I love being a library clerk. It is a wonder to
display a good book that has not been checked out in 10 or 15 years and have
a student pick it up and read it and truly enjoy it. It is a wonder to find
an article in a magazine a teacher could use for their particular subject.
It is a wonder to see that with all the media and techno gizzos nothing
takes the place of a quite spot and an apple to munch on and a good book to
sink into.
