In terms of the discussion on "uneducated librarians" It seems to me that that there are a number of aspects to be considered. 1. Placing an "untrained" somebody in the library either by replacement or startup. 2. Placing a "trained" person - someone with paraprofessional training, or with school library coursework, or on the job training in the library. 3. Placing a person with a Education School Library endorsement/certification from their state. 4. Placing a "MLS" person in the library. IMHO # 1 is wrong, no matter what the circumstances - wrong for the teachers, wrong for the students, wrong for the community and especially when replacing one of the other categories. #2 May not be great, but circumstances may make it a good choice - the person works hard, gets the training needed, goes after the certification. #3 Is GOOD - the state recognizes the need for certification of the school librarian as different from the classroom teacher, and recognizes that a librarian with education background is a good choice for a school. #4 is GOOD - if the person also has some educational background or is willing to learn. I feel that the certification is important, I just don't feel that MLS is the ONLY certification. Debbie Stafford Gen. H.H.
