Elem: Target: Story about Dutch boy and the dike

We had a parent and child seeking the title of the story about the little
boy who saves his town by placing his finger in the dike. I know there is a
G- rated story that has a happy ending and another version wherethe young
man freezes to death but saves the town. The parent was, of course,
interested in the G-rated version. Can someone provide me with the title and
author?
