Joan - Even though I work in a Middle School, High School library, I'm a strong = advocate for letting children check out materials that may be above their = reading level. It students have a strong interest in a subject, they may = do just fine with the more difficult materials. And parents or older = siblings may be reading the difficult material to them at home, too. Sometimes in our zeal to have children books that are at their reading = level, or on our "reading lists", we forget that children have their own = preferences about reading material. I know a young boy in one of our elementary schools who struggles with = every book report assignment he is given. That's because he HATES fiction = - he doesn't like to read about "made-up stuff." But give him non-fiction:= biographies, how-to manuals, and history, etc. and he will read. = Unfortunately for him, most 4th grade reading assignments are FICTION. Just a thought ... Diane K.
