ELEM: great science books for middle school?

Hello,
This is my first year in a middle school, and I am missing all those
basic science books that I had at my elementary school library.
Specifically I need titles of books that I can use with special
education students on science fair topics. An example would be how a
lens works,  why an airplane flies, what is matter, etc.  I don't want
them to look like "I Can Read" books, but that is exactly what some of
these students need. Thank you for your help, Joan
