With a bit of experimenting, I discovered that placing the bar code label on the back top closest to the spine is best simply because we can flip the top of the book out during inventory time. A trick showed to me is to use heavy plastic (like from a binder) and make an "L"-shaped template which to use during the application of the label, placing the label on the inside of the "L". We found that solved a tremendous array of issues, like should we put a label over a picture, and ensured that the label was consistantly applied. I realize that many of us assume that we must cajole and do whatever is required to ensure that resources are available to all students and staff. But, it is NOT the responsibility of the school's librarian to ensure the safe return or replacement of lost items BEYOND WHAT THE ADMINISTRATION SUPPORTS. In all my schools, I have explained this concept to the administration, recommending procedures like withholding report cards, bills from the business office, etc. and in each case, once the administration understands, they quickly review their support (or lack of it) in retaining the school's property. If there is no support, treat the item as a new one and move on.
