I would like to thank everyone who responded to my query about =
stimulating interest in the media center. Here are the responses that I =
received. I waited until after the February break to post the hit. Thank =
you all for your helpful and varied suggestions.

Stimulating interest in students and staff:
Make sure that every teacher that wants to use your library talks
to you first (1) share the assignment with you before the students come
in (2) team teaches with you to prepare and or write the lesson. With
this information of content, you start to gather resources for the
lesson. In the old days we would build a reserve shelf of all relevant
resources. Today we still do that but go one step more and build a web
page of Internet resources. I do that by developing a Dewey decimal
organization of all Internet links that meet the needs of all the
teachers:

<http://www.sanjuan.edu/schools/mesaverde/libtech/libtech.html>

Over time (five years) the database grows with a cross-reference to the
books. When a student discovers he can find maps online at 912, he/she
finally realizes that the same information can be found in the book
shelves under 912. Most students would rather use the computers first.
That's al right because they are learning to cross reference back to the
books where many times they can find more information.=20

I am the Webmaster for the school, but I try to get all the teachers
involved in their subjects web site. Tell me what your are studying and
I will find the resources. Isn't that what Librarians are suppose to
do?=20

We still help students understand how to do research, how to use search
engines (portals), but that is another lesson. Sometimes if the teacher
has the time that can be incorporated into the lesson.

I lost my replay in the middle....You must realize that most classroom
teachers do not exert themselves when it come to using creativity in
lesson design. Neither do they usually enjoy being "shown up" by the =
LMS.
Schools of Ed do not teach classroom teachers or administrators how to
value and use the library media program. Their texts do not mention the
word. Most of them do not have a personal good experience to draw on and
thereby become a campaigner. You have to be diplomatic and you have to
give credit to anyone else, deserved or not.

The schools the flourish are those that have an administrator who
evaluates classroom teachers on how well they use the library media
program and collaborate with the LMS. Few and far between.

Neither you nor the principal can create a good library media program. =
It
takes both of you as a team.

You might use ILL and look for some of the books by M. Ellen Jay. And
since you are at Southern you probably know Bunny Yesner and her book
Evaluating School Library Media Programs. Ellen's titles include:
Motivation and the School Library Teacher, Ready-to-go Reading Incentive
Programs for Schools and Libraries, The Library/Computer Lab
Classroom Connection: Linking content, thinking; Writing, Designing
Instruction for Diverse Abilities and the Library Media Teacher's Role,
and 250+ Activities and Ideas for Developing Literacy Skills. Most =
recent
ones are available from Neal Schuman.

*************************************************************

Try service, service, service. At every opportunity. Ask what they need,
get it immediately through purchase, borrowing, online sources, or
whatever. Anticipate needs and supply the materials or information. Be =
nice.
These tactics may not give splashy, immediate results; but they will =
make
you a solid, depended-upon center for the school.

*************************************************************
Jazzy displays. Student work. Contests. Book talks at every
opportunity: morning announcements, class visits, assemblies, PTA
meetings, etc.

Listen carefully at lunch to things teachers and admin are doing both
in school and out. If not asked for info, offer it anyway.

Be visible.

Have fun.

Last May I posted a HIT on something similar as I was graduating and
interviewing at the time. Go to the AskERIC Mailing List Archive at:

http://ericir.syr.edu/plweb-cgi/fastweb?searchform+listservs

Select LM_NET.
Search for "Hook 'em on"

    Stimulate interest by:
a.. Providing new, exciting books selected to match the curriculum =
and student's interest.
    2. Providing a comfortable environment that invites students.
    3. Providing a pleasant staff that welcome student questions and =
listen to their interests.
    *******************************************************************
   =20
I would start with a staff survey mailed to the staff in the summer =
mailings
the school/district odes anyway. The instrument should include =
several
items that ask what the respondent what they used most and what =
(items or
services) they would use if it were in the library. I would also =
suggest
you talk with teacher leaders (whatever they call them) during the =
summer to
determine what the staff hot buttons are.
    Good luck!
    ***************************************************************
Send out a monthly newsletter listing new books, displays up, =
classes and=20
how they're using the library, magazine summaries (now and then), =
quotes,=20
recipes from the internet, internet websites, etc. The parents love=20
    it...they read it before the headmaster's newsletter...and now and=20
then I have little quizzes with answers about new books, science =
topics,=20
etc. There are a LOT more people visiting this year.
*****************************************************************.....

I just finished my annual Love a Librarian contest-with tons of prizes.
I ask a few questions about myself, photocopy them and students fill
them out. I put a display in one of the library showcases with my love
a librarian bumper sticker, hearts(construction paper), and photos of me =
with
students and faculty, and some of my thank you notes from people!
