Dear LM_NETTERS,
I am just returning after a 3 month medical leave of absence and have
come across something at my school that makes it difficult for me.
I am at a small 9-12 high school (~350 students) and they did not hire a
substitute for the library while I was gone. The library was just kind
of "left open" for all to use whenever. If someone happened to be
around, they would check out books via Winnebago, if they knew how. A
good core of parent volunteers helped keep the place running,
thankfully.
Since I've returned (this is my 3rd week back), I've been instructed to
leave the library open and unlocked, even when I leave for the
day...."students need access at ALL times." It's even open and full of
kids when I arrive in the AM.
My question is this: have any of you had this experience or heard of
this type of situation before? We are not a preppy boarding school with
a "code of honor" or any such thing. I am a 1-person library staff so
there isn't the option of staggering hours.
I take my job seriously and wonder how I should deal with this, both
with the admin and within myself (I canNOT continue being stressed out
like this this!) I am not against access but unsupervised? Isn't there a
law against this?
FYI- This is my 10th year at this school so I have been around awhile.
Please help!
