Marge, and the LM_Net group... Note: I am no longer employed at ISS-SU/ERIC. The funding for my position ran out in December. However, I am now a volunteer at the ED's Oasis project. My new email address is <ajninno@syr.edu>. Please make a note of it, and send any future email there. I'll help out on LM_NET when I can, as a friend and colleague (used to teach 6th grade). Meanwhile, please take advantage of the resources listed below - all top notch. The suggestion in my original post to the LM_NET listserv was to use the book, "Teaching with the Internet" by Don Leu. In it you will find recommendations of many K12 websites and evaluation criteria. You will also see that ED's Oasis and some of the other sites I mention below. Teaching with the Internet: Lessons from the Classroom, 2nd edition by Don J. Leu, Jr. and Deborah Diadiun Leu, Syracuse University 1999, 336 pages, ISBN 0-926842-85-4 Christopher-Gordon Pubs., Inc. 1-800-934-8322 1502 Providence Hwy., Suite #12, Norwood, MA 02062 http://web.syr.edu/~djeu/teaching.html Here are two more useful books for teachers, especially those looking for current titles on technology integration in the classroom. Net Lessons: Web-Based Projects for Your Classroom, w/CD by Laura Parker Roerden March 1997, 284 pages, ISBN 1-56592-291-3 Songline Studios, Inc. and O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. 101 Morris St., Sebastopol, CA 95472 http://www.ora.com/catalog/netlessons/ Net Lessons features 70 K-12 classroom-tested lesson plans that harness the unique potentials of the Web, plus hundreds of extensions and ideas for all subject areas. The book also includes curriculum frameworks for creating your own successful web projects, assessment tools, and the advice of teachers who have used the Web in their classrooms. Great Teaching in the One-Computer Classroom, 4th edition by David A. Dockterman, EdD. Tom Snyder Productions 80 Coolidge Hill Road Watertown, MA 02172-2817 1-800-342-0236 http://www.teachtsp.com/ Please take a look at the ED's Oasis site, where K12 websites are evaluated according to a set of guidelines (posted there) by a volunteer staff of professional K12 educators. If you need more advice, send your query to the Network Information Specialists at AskERIC and to the Mentors at AskLN, (Ask the AT&T Learning Network), listed below. You'll get plenty of good information there. Hope this helps. Good luck! Let me know how you make out. If you have any more questions, please send them to directly to AskERIC.
