GEN:book title?

One of my colleagues is trying to think of a book title.  She says the
novel is about a burned-out male writer who goes to an island, meets many
of the natives, and is invited to a house owned by a wealthy but strange
man.  In the book is a cave with people who survived some kind of
holocaust, possibly a nuclear war, and are hiding on this island.

It's driving us both crazy.  If you can help us with the title and author,
we could sleep better tonight!
