Dear Heidi and all: Yes computers in the classrooms of "unenlightened" teachers can be a tremendous waste. I am currently taking a course on creating online courses and one of the problems that we have been grappling with is the need to get "resistant" staff to use the computers effectively rather than as a babysitter. The answer seems to be a combination of mandatory training and effective modeling by those early innovators who use computers successfully in their classroom. My final project is an online course for my district staff about developing collaborative Internet projects in the K-8 classroom. I'm hoping to have it online by this fall.
