Okay, now I'm confused....I actually listen to Paul Harvey (regardless of
his slant---but then I listen to Rush too, so I'm really guilty of being
"something" ) anyway......

I heard PH say that a "study was done in (?)--I thought in the US--that
provided evidence that students have increased tendencies toward violence
based upon the amount of sugar consumption, i.e. pop machines, candy
machines, etc. available in the schools." He also mentioned that the
violence that we are now seeing in public schools was not seen during the
times when "sugar products" were readily available in schools during the
'50's,'60's, and '70's.

As a teacher / librarian / life-time student, I definitely believe that
sugar has some impact on what we are seeing in students today, but I have
questions. PH suggested that to find out what type of "allergic reaction
students had toward these chemicals could be determined by eliminating
things such as sugar, flour, chocolates, etc. one at a time from their diets
to test their reaction." (I would also suggest eliminating some music,
videos, movies, literature, and even people...but that would be censoring,
right?) Let's face it, food has it's place, but so does parenting!
Responsibility comes to play in here too! I don't want to give up my
chocolate because it is being accused of causing children to pull out guns
to kill one another...as PH might suggest...but I think responsibility of
one's actions is the biggest factor involved here.

Whether it's reading scores that go up or violence that goes down, being a
parent/or a mentor to a child, being a part of that kid's life and his/her
school activities, being aware of how the child responds to the environment,
and just being a better parent/mentor than what some of us are being right
now, could DEFINITELY make a difference....let's make it "responsibility on
our part", not just some inanimate object's ability to control our future!

...off my soapbox.....thanks for listening....don't flame me! :-)
