Several had asked for a HIT about publishing a newspaper with elementary
school children. Thanks to all who gave the following ideas/information.

Third graders can easily use Word, but ours prefer The Writing Center...it
has formatted newsletter templates, etc...But, if Word is what you have, use
it and import pictures from KidPix...

I have created a school newspaper using HyperStudio...it is a LOT of
work...for something which ALL the students and parents will view, I have
found it is better to use a program like The Writing Center, AppleWorks
(ClairsWorks), or Word...

I also once worked on the school newspaper with a teacher who did the paper
the "old fashioned way" by having the kids type within 3" columns, printing
them out, then cutting and pasting to actual newspaper sheets which our local
paper supplied...Again...a LOT of work..it looked very professional, but a
great deal of work.

My suggestion: keep it kid-like...the kids will enjoy it more...and make sure
they don't have a "gossip column"...hurt feelings, you know...

Check your Microsoft word. There might be a template for Newsletter
wizard. What version of Word is available to you?

Works and Word are very similar...you won't have a problem going between
them...especially depending on the VERSION of Word...the higher the version,
the more versatile it is!

I had a computer club with my 5th graders and we made a school newspaper. We
used all different programs because our paper was more like a magazine. The
kids e-mailed teachers to find out what was going on the next month and what
items they wanted announced in the paper. The teachers e-mailed their
response
back and the kids typed it up using whatever program they liked. Some used
Word, some used Student Writing Center, and some even used Print Shop. Each
article was printed out for copying. Other kids added: artwork (using various
drawing programs), word searches (using Excel), book quizzes; puzzles (made
with
puzzlemaker.com) and other things. Someone designed a cover with Print Shop.
We printed everything out, ran copies and stapled them together. They were so
popular, teachers requested additional copies for their rooms. It really was
fun for all of us.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
