This upcoming school year we are implementing Pat Cunningham's Four Blocks
(Guided Reading, Self-Selected Reading, Vocabulary, & Writing) Approach for
teaching Language Arts. Part of this approach recommends that each Lang.
Arts class have a classroom library of approximately 500 reading materials
for the self-selected component. This approach is very common in our
county's elementary schools, but new for those of us in middle schools. Is
anyone out there in a middle school who is currently using this? My
principal wants me to recommend a vendor where we can acquire a quantity
(and variety) of books, especially low level, like popular picture books
that could be purchased for each language arts teacher to start their
"classroom" library. We both agree that paperback books would be best. I
am to spend $200 per teacher for their sets, and we have already discussed
rotation as a way to keep fresh, new materials in the classrooms. I have
been told not to concern myself with the management of the books, only
assist in the selecting and purchasing. Could anyone offer some help in
terms of where to get books cheap?? (Remember, $200 a teacher, which IMHO
isn't a lot.)
