Hello all,
I had responded personally to the original request for opinions but =
in light of Shereen's request, decided to post to the whole group.
I just finished both Potter books and loved them both. I am in a K-8 =
Catholic school and originally wondered about parental reaction but had =
decided to purchase the books anyway. Incidentally, I saw the =
paperback of the British version a few weeks ago when I was in Canada =
and the title of the first book there is "Harry Potter and the =
Philosopher's Stone." Interesting. But that's off the subject. Last =
week a priest in our archdiocese wrote about the books. He does not =
generally review books and certainly not children's books. However, he =
was so delighted with these two books that he couldn't resist. He =
reassured parents not to react negatively to the sorcerer/witchcraft =
theme, that there is nothing morally objectionable in the books. Now, =
I happened to mention that to one of the women who run the local =
children's bookshop a day or two later since the first thing she asked =
me when I walked in was if I had read the books. Anyway, when I =
mentioned the article, she said that someone else had told her that it =
had also been very positively reviewed in a conservative Christian =
publication. I think that in all likelihood these books are being =
looked at in the same manner as the Narnia books.
