Hi, Cassie, and LM_NET,

I agree with you strongly in theory - kids that are well-supervised
at home, whose parents know what they are reading and in what type of
activities they are engaging, most likely allow their children the
freedom to read about all sorts of topics. As a Christian parent of
13 and 8 year olds I do just that. If something is questionable I
read it with them so we can discuss it together.
However, I have friends who are very right-wing Christians and who
feel strongly that magic, tarot cards, ouija boards, etc are tools
Satan uses to reach the unsuspecting. Children in these age groups
are very impressionable and subject to peer pressure. As a
media specialist, I feel my job is to meet the needs of the community
I was hired to serve. Although I personally am anxious to read the
Harry Potter books, and have read L'Engle and others with my own
children, I agree with the writer (I believe it was Earl) who said
there are too many good books to risk making an uproar about a few
questionable ones.

Just my opinion,
