Dear LM_NETers, I recently wrote a reply in reference to someone's question about the Harry Potter books, and how "Christians" would be accepting (or not) of them. In my reply, I mentioned that I had been reading Madeleine L'Engle to my children. I did not mean to imply that Ms. L'Engle's books were Anti-Christian, nor that she is not a Christian. I was not even trying to compare Ms. L'Engle's books to Rowling's. I merely meant that, in reading science fiction, some very right-wing Christians may feel these books are not what they would prefer their children to read. For example: dressing up for Halloween: I have friends who do not allow their children to participate _at all_ in Halloween related activities, but personally, and in my opinion, I don't believe that allowing my children to dress up as cheerleaders and storybook characters (or even witches or ghosts) is devil-worship. I do not mean to start a discussion on this holiday. I just feel that what I believe, and how I raise my children, and what I allow them to read, is my perogative, just as it is that of every other parent. As LMSs we need to be prepared for justification of titles in our collection; however, if, in dealing with a specific clientele, we may need to make adjustments to provide titles that meet their needs (and do not offend). I am a Christian, but my public school collection does not contain a Bible (of any translation). I still feel that my collection contains everything (within budget, of course!) that meets the needs of my school population in regards to fulfilling the curriculum requirements. I do not mean to sound defensive; I just want to clarify that I did did not mean to besmirch the name of L'Engle (one of my favorite authors!).
