Thanks to everyone who sent me information on Magic Cards for a colleague in Chile. No one found anything "Satanic" in them - most replies mentioned that game playing, possible theft, and cost of cards could be a factor. I have included one of the thoughtful replies from Don Blackmon as an example of the thoughtful responses that I received. Once again, this listserv shows it's reliability and helpfulness on Library and other issues. Thanks again Don wrote: Magic cards are interesting, there is the opportunity for people to read things intoit because of the nature of the game. Magic is a card game. It deals with the idea of Wizards, dragons, warriors, and spirits, and some conserative group way find this questionable. But the actual game play does not deal with role playing, it is a card game. Remember the card game "old maid", well this is the same idea, the game has it's own cards that are organized to make a deck, and then you play cards with another person. SOme of the cards are, probably the best way to say it, are scary in nature, but definitley the minority. Once a kid is in JR high, this should not be as big as an issue. There are very good pros to the game, it requires math skills, and practices math skills. It requires you to organize information and organize strategies. More importantly in requires social skills since you have to play against someone and deal with an alive person.
