Thanks to all who sent me ideas for Middle School Media. Several of you
asked for me to share the information...
>.............................................................................
..
Has anyone done book chats? Book chats were highly encouraged by all who
wrote in to me. Some authors suggested were: Agatha Christie and Lillian
Braun "Cat" mysteries, Avi books,Newbery "Holes" by Sachar, Harry Potter,
Michael Crichton, and state's children's book award books.
..............................................................................
....
Any ideas for a new media specialist such as myself? Ideas shared were: 1.
Take one day at a time. 2. Don't be afraid to be ridiculous. 3. Buddy up
with another LMS in your district. 4. Join FAME. 5. Learn your collection
by putting away books yourself. 6.Participate in Sunshine State Young
Readers Award program. 7. Meet with staff members and find out what they
would like from you. 8. Love the kids or they will drive you crazy! 9.Send
catalogs to teachers to get their feedback on what to order. 10. Take time
to know your students, teachers, and school.
..............................................................................
...
3. Titles of books and magazines that would be helpful:
100 Power Tools for the Library Media Specialist by the ALA, Mike Eisenberg's
Big Six Newsletter, The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause and Deathwatch
by Rob White. (Both are good for 8th grade book talks.)
Also: The Book Report from Linworth Publications, Multibedia Schools, The
Library Journal, Booklist, VOYA, and Biography Today...
..............................................................................
...
4. Websites.....

..............................................................................
...
5. Where do I begin?
Have a sense of humor! Start off with an orientation to the library.
Collaborate with teachers on their themes. Send out a little ditty
introducing yourself.
..............................................................................
...
6. Any ideas for a needs assessment or survey?
Make it extremely brief and attach a "goody" to it like a bag of m & m's.

...
Thanks to all who sent me these ideas...You are all so great. I didn't
include names because some people asked me not to. I hope I included some
things that will be helpful to you who are in the same boat that I am. Good
luck!
