I used to use the catalogs from jobbers (Brodart, Econoclad, etc.) to help me select books in appropriate for my middle school collection. I don't recall which, but one of them lists the books by Dewey classification, making it easy to find books on a particular topic. The blurbs in these catalogs indicate reading levels and interest levels. On the subject of The Depression, may I suggest Cynthia Rylant's Something Permanent. This is a collection of photographs by Walker Evans accompanied by poetry by Rylant. The Depression is outside our middle school curriculum, but when I had students interested in those times, I recommended Something Permanent. It's not the kind of book a casual poetry reader would choose, but every one of my students who borrowed this book was profoundly affected by it.
