Dear Colleagues, If you have time, I'd appreciate your ideas and suggestions on ways to promote student recreational reading. I have a very busy library and my nonfiction collection is strongly connected to curricula. My staff heavily uses the nonfiction materials for research purposes. My fiction collection is well balanced with a good selection of various genres, classics, award winners and contemporary literature. But still it remains unused! My language arts department is so focued on novel units that they do not require reading outside the selected novel. I have tried booktalks, interesting displays, thematic groupings and still my fiction circulation is very poor. I recently attended a workshop with nongraded free-form book discussion groups as a means of promoting reading. Accelerated Reader or other canned program is financially out of the picture for the time being. I appreciate any suggestions you may have. I will post a hit later. -- Linda Be a KidsConnect Volunteer! ************************************* Linda Slacum, Library Media Specialist, KidsConnect Volunteer http://www.ccps.org/ccps/chms/home/home.html http://www.ccps.org/ccps/ccemo/home/home.html Cherry Hill Middle School 2535 Singerly Road, Elkton, MD 21921 lslacum@ccps.org (SCHOOL) lindas@delanet.com (HOME) ************************************* =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
