Hi there, sorry I have taken so long to post these responses, but thanks to all of you for your patience and for the responses you shared with me. 1. Here is a site for Electric Library's Educator's Resource kit, <http://www.k12.infornautics.com/resources>. this is a site only for teachers and librarians. 2. Also, Electric Library sends out a booklet, "A Teacher's Guide to the Mini-Search" which is rather useful. 3. With reference to using it with students, or demonstrating how it's used one librarian said she did a small research projnect on the Makah whaling episode . She used this as a way to demonstrate all of Electric Library's various search possibilities. 4. Another librarian wrote that "the main feature I feel users and need instruction with is choosing which dataases to sort and how to reduce results. It's been really good as a source for pictures so this is one of the main features I instruction students and teachers on."....this librarian also instructs on the use of boolean strategies.... 5. How to advertise for Electric Library--give presentations using an overhead projnector..display banners about Electric Library..try to get feedback from teachers and students on how they feel about this tool. 6. One librarian wrote that she learned alot about electric library at a tech conference..."I did a PowerPoint presentation for our faculty on using Electric Library instead of search engines for betterinformation. ...Assume a student is coming into the library to research something on child rearing, say..."spanking." Go to Alta Vista, ..and type in "spanking". The gasps could be heard across the room. We just looked at the titles...we didn't even need to call up the sites themselves. Then go to Electric Library and do the same...what a difference. These articles are about pediatricians and parents and spanking!" This librarian went on to say that she clicked on the icons on the main sc reen (referring to books, magazines, radio etc.) so that teachers could see the v ariety of materials available. One more point--the librarian sugests that students just search titles for a better "hit". 7. Another answer, a librarian uses Elibrary "on the encyclopedia mode to get articles and pictures for animal reports for elementary students. It's cut down on the hassles of hard copy encylcopedias..." another nice feature of Elibrary-the grade level of the material accessed is noed. 8. Another response from someone who uses the tool in a 7--12 school...I love..the natural language search interface..." "When training teachers it's ..worth the time to point out the "sort by..." box at the b ottom of the screen. This person also said that Elibrary is "producing some great training materials by Carl Janetka, which connects various subjects to our state standards thru Elibrary." I think this pretty much summarizes the responses to my request for information. Thank you all again, from Helen Dittmer, Redwood Day School librarian, Oakland, Ca <hdittme@ix.netcom.com> =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
