Thanks to all who responded. I am passing along a copy of this hit to
the 5th grade teachers. As usual, the collective wisdom of this list
makes me look good! Here are the edited responses:

I don't remember the exact title of this book, but I believe its called
Phoebe, the Spy. It's about a girl who is sent to be a servant of
Revolutionary commanders in a house they have overtaken and she spies on
them for the Americans.

While not set in the Revolution and a fantasy. 5th graders at my school
love
Riddle of Pennecroft Farm. It is the story of a boy who meets a
revolutionary soldier's ghost. It goes a long way to explain terms and
phrases that grew out of that time period. And as the boy learns about
the
revolution so does the reader.

My husband uses Johnny Tremain with his fifth grade.

I have a 5th grade teacher that like On my Honor by Marion Dane Bauer.
It
is a great book and not too long. Great lesson to be learned.
******************
We used Guns for General Washington by Seymour Reit for our fith grade
Battle of the Books and the kids loved it.

O'Dell, Sarah Bishop
Clapp, I'm Deborah Sampson
Lawson, Mr. Revere and I
Forbes, Johnny Tremain
******************
An old Robert Lawson book, Mr. Revere and I, is very simple, and the
kids enjoy learning about the war through the eyes of Paul Revere's
horse. I booktalk it with the low 5th grade reading class.

I just processed a book today from Silver Moon Press--Drums at
Saratoga--from the publisher's Stories of the States collection. It 's
no great shakes as
literature, but it is historical fiction for the "lower-reading"
student, and its subject is the American Revolution. Another title that
comes to mind is George Washington's Socks; it's a time-travel book
about a group of today's kids accompanying Washington across the
Delaware.
