The results are in! Our favorites are: Mitinet - 14 Cardmaster (Follett) - 4 Rachel's - 4 Librarian's Helper - 3 QuickCard (Follett)- 2 MacCard - 1 PC Cardmaker (Winnebago) - 1 Precision One (Winnebago) - 1 For those of us who are interested, comments from LM_NET are given below, in groups by program. MITINET +++++++++++ Mitinet/marc Software http://www.mitinet.com/ does cards & labels. The real plus is that as you imput your data to print your cards you are also creating full-MARC records that can be saved toward the day you are able to automate. It runs on PCs and can be used on Power Macs with Virtual PC. See their website for specifics. I can't say enough good things about this program. It works RIGHT and their people are friendly and helpful. +++++++++++++++++++++++ Mitinet MARC does that, and more. It lets you generate MARC records that, if you save them on disk, can be used when you automate. +++++++++++++++ You can print cards and labels from Mitinet if you have Virtual PC loaded on your Mac. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Mitinet/MARC. I'll swear by it, and I still use it WITH Follett. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Call Mitinet/MARC (Information Transform Co.) in Madison, WI. They have this wonderful software which will create MARC records which you can then save for the time when you are able to automate, and print card sets, too. 1-800-854-6272 +++++++++++++++++ Our school district uses Mitinet/MARC software and boy do I love it. I even talked most of the elementary librarians into giving it a try because it is so user friendly. Mitinet does all those cataloging chores for you such as which field and tag, etc. and the punctuation. You pay them to keep up with all the AACR2 items, etc. Mitinet can be used on a stand alone pc, so some of our unautomated libraries have started using Mitinet to generate barcoded records, etc. I hope this is what you were talking about. We really have been pleased with this program---I used to work for the library coordinator for the district, so I do have experience with users at all grade levels on Mitinet. Don't have their address here at home, but shouldn't be too difficult to find on the 'net. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ An excellent choice would be Mitinet/MARC, which does catalog cards and labels as well as creating full MARC records. Their URL is http://www.mitinet.com/ We are automated, so don't use the print card function. But I have used this program for several years very successfully, and it is the program of choice for cleaning up our records in the Texas Library Connection. The very real advantage of using this software is the full MARC records that you will collect while you are waiting to automate. I would recommend that you download records from whatever source is available to you (CD-ROM like WLN's LaserCat, statewide union database like Texas Library Connection, or commercial vendor like Marcive, Inc.'s MarciveWEB Select), run those downloads through Mitinet, print the cards and labels, and save the records to a diskette for later importation to your automation system. ++++++++++++++++++++ Our district processing center uses Mitinet/Marc to generate cards for the campuses that still use them. We do all of our original cataloging in Mitinet as well as editing MARC records from vendors. If you are not yet automated this would be a way to start generating a file of records to be ready when you do automate. ++++++++++++++++++++ I don't have to print cards, but I do know that MITINET/marc will print them (and labels) using a limited selection of card and label formats. I've used the program *extensively* for other purposes, and it will let you create original USMARC records as well as import records from a vendor or your database for cleanup, etc. (just to let you know that M/m wouldn't be shelved in the closet when you *are* fully automated). I noticed in a recent supplies catalog from Brodart that the cards, labels, etc. that they offer are coded as to which software program(s)/automation system(s) they can be used with. Hope this helps some. I'll be glad to answer any questions about M/m that you have, or you can learn more on their web site at http://www.mitinet.com +++++++++++++++++++++++++ You can print cards, both shelflist and full sets, from Mitinet/marc. Also it can be used to print labels of both OCLC-type sizes. While this is an MS-DOS program, Mitinet can be used on a Mac running Virtual-PC software as well. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CARDMASTER (FOLLETT) ++++++++++++++++++++++ I have used two different card programs. One is from Follett called Cardmaster Plus which uses the Alliance Plus CD for MARC records. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ I use CardMaster from Follett and it has been basically trouble free. +++++++++++++++++++++++ We also use CardMaster from Follett. It is a DOS only program. +++++++++++++++++++++++ RACHEL'S +++++++++++++++++++++++ For several years, before getting the Follett automated system, I used a shareware program called "RACHELS Catalog Card Printer." It has versions for MAC/PC/Apple //. Cost of most versions is under $50. It produces catalog cards and labels for spine, pocket, and card. It works extremely well, and even on a 5.25" disk would save 50 card records. ( I was using it on an old Apple //e.) Mr. Peter Konneker still offers the program, since I have suggested the program to others and they have made contact. I don't have an URL, but you can try to telephone or write: RACHELS (919) 553-5511 111 Innsbruck Clayton, NC 27520. +++++++++++++++++++++++ I have an easy to use program. It was available for both PC or MAC. It is not MARC record, but only cost @30.00. Bad news? I don't know if it is still available. Here is the address and phone number from my user's manual. RACHELS Catalog Card Printer Peter Konneker 111 Innsbruck Drive Clayton, NC 27520 1-800-869-7390 I first read about it in Library Talk and The Book Report several years ago and ordered it for myself. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ I use a little program called "Rachel" at my little Family History Center that works well in a pinch, but is a lttle bit of a pain if you have to do a lot of items. -- But it was really cheap ??$30.00?? +++++++++++++++++++ LIBRARIAN'S HELPER ++++++++++++++++++ I've been using Librarian's Helper for 4 years on a PC. It works great. It is available from major catalog companies such as The Library Store, Demco, and Highsmith. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Before we were automated (it's been 1 year now!), I used a program called "Librarian's Helper". I believe I got it through Demco...maybe Gaylord. I forget now. It served its purpose very well. ++++++++++++++++++++ QUICKCARD (FOLLETT) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Way back when I use to use Follett's Quick Card that generated cards on the computer and printed them on track-fed catalog cards. That was on a PC. +++++++++++++++++++++ MACCARD ++++++++++++++++++++ > Hi! I still use MacCard to catalog ALL my books and print cards right > here in the library. It works fine, but printing can be dicey if your > hardware is too new. Card stock comes folded for continuous printing > on an Imagewriter or in separate pages for the Stylewriter. Doesn't > work, though, with most of my PowerMac, although I can use them to > type on okay. What I finally did was set up an old Mac Classic with a > Stylewriter l l just for making cards and labels. Now I can sit at my > desk to type, save a batch of cards on a disk & transfer them to the > Classic when I'm ready to print. Hope this helps. Write back if you > have more questions. I had a terrible time setting up what sounds so > stupidly simple now, because there were so few people doing this > anymore... +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ WINNEBAGO +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The other is from Precision One, the program I now use to obtain MARC records for my Winnebago Circ/Cat program. It also has a "Print Card Sets" function. Haven't tried this one though, since I no longer maintain a card type catalog. Mine is all on computers now. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Several years ago I also used a program with an Apple IIe. It was from Winnebago Software and worked well. Winnebago has evolved this product into their Winnebago PC Cardmaker. For more information you can click on it at the bottom of the page located at: http://www.winnebago.com/PRODUCTS/index.htm ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ And that's all!
