I am jealous! I have taught CW for 4 years and love it. I divide the time into 3 sections- memoir, short fiction and poetry. For memoir, I use Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott and The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron as inspiration and a source for ideas. For short fiction, I have used What if? and a great book called Fast Fiction by Allen. My favorite unit is always poetry and we watch Il Postino, write lots of odes and praise poems and be sure to go on a walk, find an object that "speaks" to you and write a poem about why this object needs you the writer. I have also had lots of success with used 10-15 minute writes using Goldberg's principles of writing practice: Don't Think Keep your hand moving You are free to write the worst junk in america Don't worry about punctuation, grammar, etc Go for the jugular Good luck. Use pictures as prompts, and create a class collection at the end. They love it.
