I have always thought that fast food, bookstore and other chains could prove useful in providing a wealth of clues to making libraries more effective. Procedures, colors, traffic patterns, management techniques etc. have been studied by the corporations and can provide information that I can try to apply if appropriate. The question I pose today is how do they keep consistancy over a period of time. And I ask it in attempting to ensure that qualities in service, in cataloguing data, etc. are maintained over a number of years, instead of being changed each time a new librarian arrives. My example is Chinese Food - the restaurant I fequented in my youth still maintains the same menu and, despite being away for a long time, I go back and find the Sweet & Sour Pork the same as I remembered it. It appears a rather strange question, but I think there is a clue here that can be applied to the library. If you have "insider" information, anything you've read, etc. on this, I'd sure appreciate the information. (Of course, if you've got the Sweet & Sour sauce recipe that REALLY works, I'd love it) Earl Earl Sande Secondary School Librarian International School of Tanganyika Post Office Box 2651 Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (e-mail : sandes@wilken-dsm.com) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
