I just erased a message from a media specialist who was looking for a poem for a publication celebrating inheritance. Then it hit me what a wonderful poem would be: John G. Neihardt is the poet. The poem is "The Child's Heritage." It is an wonderful poem. Neihardt's daughter Hilda Neihardt lives in Columbia, MO. There is also a website for the Neihardt Center in Bancroft, NE. I don't have the words with me here at school, but it starts out: Oh, there are those, a sordid clan With pride in gaud, and faith in gold Who prize the sacred soul of man, For what his hands have sold. And these shall deem thee humbly bred, They shall not hear, they shall not see The kings among the lordly dead who walk and talk with thee. It goes on from there to talk about the literary and other gifts this child inherited. If the requester is interested, he can contact me and I will copy the poem, which I have at home, and send it to him. I am sure he could get it from Ms. Neihardt as well. Have a great day! ___________________________ Judy L. Meadows Library Media Specialist Verona R-7 School District 101 E.
