TECH: Athena vs. Alexandria with Macs?

Hi All,
    Help!  I am in a 400-student,  K-5, all-Mac building, making
my first decision about automating.  I thought I had made the
final decision to buy Athena over Alexandria, and then found out
we'd have to purchase a Windows-based computer as the server.
     The bottom line ...  Is Athena worth it over Alexandria,
because we will need to get an additonal Windows-based computer?
As a seasoned Mac user but an automation novice, am I asking for
trouble planning to buy Athena, and therefore mixing platforms?
How difficult or easy is it to run Athena on our Mac network?
I have read nothing but rave reviews about Athena.   PLEASE drop
me a short note if you have insight on this problem.
