As a media specialist for 21 years I have always been fortunate to work for principals that allowed me to use flexible scheduling. The advantages: Unrestricted access of the media resources at time of need; visits to the media center are determined by the curriculum needs; information access skills are determined by the students "need to know" which is more meaningful to the students and the retention of these skills is better; the media specialist has an opportunity to work with large groups, small groups, and/or individual students when needed; the media center is used all day in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons; students utilize the media center independently to explore and use all of the collection including book, audio-visual, multimedia materials, etc.; teachers view the media center and the media specialist as an integral part of the curriculum. These are just a few of the reasons I use flexible scheduling. An excellent book is "Flexible Access Library Media Programs" by Jan Buchanan available from Libraries Unlimited.
