I am sorry for posting to the whole list, but an english teacher with an
aol address asked for the bookmark contest info. Here is this year's
mailing as text. If anyone would like the pretty version as a word 97
document attached, they can email me off list. I regret the necessity for
this posting, I was too quick with the delete key. If you know the
identity of the person who asked for more info on the contest, please make
sure she gets it. Best, A

Re: Bookmark Contest 13
Date: 3 8 99

Here is the information on the thirteenth annual SLS bookmark contest. It
will commence in your buildings with your dissemination of this material
and will end with the winners being named during the week of May 4th.
Entry forms and posters will be shipped later in March; certificates will
be sent in late April. This early announcement is to facilitate your
planning.

Note the continuance of the option of some participating districts to
provide their own entry and building level prizes, or none at all as they
see fit.

Note that there is no margin for delay in getting the building level
winning bookmarks to the SLS. They must be in the BOCES
delivery to us by Tuesday, 5/5/99.

The decision to participate or not must be made at the building level.
Each participating building will be responsible for selecting building
level winners which will be judged at the system level to determine the
final winners. You may choose to ask your Art Teacher for help.

The school library system will provide:
     publicity material
     entry forms
     rules
     judges (system level only)
     prizes

     Individual libraries/buildings will provide:
     book mark materials
     publicity material
     building level structure
     building level judging

The contest theme this year is "Books: Always there for you." The intent
is to continue to focus students' awareness of what the library and
reading can offer them, computer crashes, power outages, Y2K and online
databases notwithstanding. That every book they read has the potential to
make them better, whether their companion is Ramona Quimby, Gandalf the
Grey, or Carl Sagan. That in the library they can find factual information
that helps them live better in our real world as well as fiction to
delight them. That adventure stories, fantasies, and information for
school work or projects, or hobby support are available. That rewarding
and useful chunks of fiction or non fiction are to be found in the
library.

All entries should address this. While it is not necessary for the exact
wording of the theme to appear on the bookmark, some reflection of this
theme of empowerment and self improvement should be apparent
in the text or design of the bookmark. The phrases "I went with 'X' to
'Y'" or "I found out ....(whatever) or "A book helped me
understand....(whatever)" are some examples that would meet the
theme.Basically, anything that points up library resources and their use,
the wonderfulness of libraries and theirmagic, qualifies. If there is a
more direct connection to the theme, so much the better. Judges will
lookmore for quality of work and originality than slavish devotion to the
theme.
