To My Fellow LM_NET Colleagues:

I recently took over a position as a high school library media specialist
in a town in central New Jersey. As I'm sure which you're all aware, part of
my job includes dealing with audiovisual equipment.

Unfortunately, although I received an MLS degree, my library program never
provided me with any kind of audiovisual training whatsoever. I know very
little about the a.v. equipment. If we do have major problems with the a.v.
equipment, I can send it out to a service to get repaired. However, I belive
I am responsible for taking care of more minor audiovisual problems/glitches.

I have a few questions for you:

    1. Is there anyone in the school district who may be able to help me get
started to learn about the basics in AV repair? Are the folks who repair the
AV equipment(the service which I send my equipment out to) accessible to
librarians to show them about basic AV maintenance and repair for a quick
tutorial?

    2. How does one find out about the state-of-the-art AV equipment which
exists(for future purchase)? Perhaps by reading library journals, visiting an
electronics store, etc.?

    3. What are the major companies from which you order new AV equipment when
you get your library spending budget?

     4. Earlier today, I found out that we have all different models of light
bulbs for various film projectors/carousels. They have 3-letter codes(eg.
EXR). How does one learn about the various types of light bulbs out there? I'd
like to know what the codes stand for. What is needed for what kind of
equipment? etc.

   Thanks so much,
   Amy Kravitz
