LM_NET: Library Media Networking

I received lots of responses about schools who charge for printing...
mainly to help students be selective, a worthy goal. I wish I could charge
a minimum amount...but how do you do it if there are 50 printers around the
school? It seems you can only charge if access to printing is limited to
the library and maybe one lab. Then you can set the library policy and
perhaps by having a printer at the desk, control it. But if there is access
everywhere and everyone is not consistent in charging, and if there are
many models of printers, then you marginalize the library by charging.
Students will choose other places to do their research.

I had hoped there was software allowing students to enter an ID number
everytime they printed, but I have been told by my tech people that the
progams are expensive and we would have to have different software for the
different printers in the building. It seems in this scenario, that all you
can do is ignore the stacks of paper and unclaimed stuff, consoling
yourself that it is not all that expensive. s

Sarah - I, too, charge for printing. Indeed, I could easily withstand the
cost of supplying paper and toner for the students -- but that does nothing
to encourage the students to think about what they are printing. No matter
how many times we went over it, students still needed all 20 pages from a
Web site -- and then walked off without picking them up. Our compromise is
that student individual work is free, but information printing costs $.5
per page - a very moderate cost at 20 pages per $1. Floyd
