I experienced a moment of total paranoia and fear just this past Thursday
at the university library where I am working part time as a reference
intern. Someone left a small briefcase, looking much like a laptop in
the ladies' room. As I reached toward it, it occurred to me that it could
be a bomb. I was just frozen for a few minutes while all sorts of nutty
ideas went through my head.

Finally, after an internal dialog that went something like,

"Maybe I should call security."

"Don't be an idiot, you know full well it's not a bomb."

"But it could be..."

Well, my calmer, more sensible side prevailed. I picked it up and took it
to lost and found. I was embarrassed by my reaction. I had never
experienced anything like it before, and I have found numerous briefcases,
backpacks, etc. and turned them in. At this point I'm not sure if I'm more
freaked out by the possibility or my reaction to the incident.
I guess there is nowhere where anyone can truly be assured of complete
safety. You can be victimized in your homes, schools, workplaces, stores.

I guess this is why we were given the quality of faith, in God and in the
eventual triumph of the human spirit. I believe that, as a
species, we are only beginning our adolescence. I also believe that
us kids are going to turn out okay.
