I was listening to Dr. Laura yesterday afternoon while driving around doing errands. She was announcing to her listeners how to register for the ALA conference in New Orleans, and encouraging as many people as possible to attend the conference. Dr. Laura feels that the Library Bill of Rights is unsafe for children, and that people who care about their children should attend the conference to make their views known to the ALA. It is very scary to me how she is using the power base that she has developed, through her show and her books, to attack an important and reputable organization like the ALA. An organization that has worked for years to protect individual freedoms and access to information - freedoms that are the mainstay of a democratic society. The ALA and all librarians are being called to defend the truths we hold dear and to educate the public about our mission teach children how to access information safely.
