Friday morning one of our high schools was evacuated. A custodian let a man he had never seen before (carrying a duffle bag) into the building when he first unlocked it. He got worried and went to his supervisor who then went to the principal. The custodian thought the man told him he was a substitute, so they went to every "sub" and looked them over. They could not find the man. First they decided to go to a lock down situation incase what the man had was a gun and he was waiting for an evacuation. They called the police and since there was no communication from this man they decided to evacuate to the football stadium, call in the bomb sniffing dogs, and helicopters. Again, nothing and no one was found. Next they announced the description of the man and a new teacher (January hiree) stepped forward when people said that it sounded like him. The custodian verified that he was the man he'd seen. The new teacher had dropped his son off early for a class trip and decided to get to school early. The custodian had just never seen him before. They decided it was a good practice session and let everyone back into the building. Of course a third of the students went home. We've been discussing it, was it overkill or over reaction or better safe than sorry. The verdict is still out... Lynette (Lynn.)
