One of the art projects that was the easiest for
students, looked like they had taken a lot of time, and got
the most
compliments from mothers was Scherenschnitte or the art of
German/Pennsylvania Dutch papercutting. You xerox an easy
to cut out
pattern, cut away everything but the design, and then paste
to a nice
colored background or wallpaper sample. An inexpensive frame
and voila!
Mother's Day present. Here's an example

Here's the pattern for the above example

but you can do a search for papercutting for kids or
Scherenschnitte for
kids. It was a really neat, quick and easy art project my
students
enjoyed. Here's a description

As an alternative, students can do their own silhouettes.
Here's an
article about doing that

Stained Glass Votive Candle Holder
 Materials:
colored tissue paper, torn or cut into squares (bright
colors work best...dark colors muddy whendried)
small (4 oz) glass baby food jar with the label removed
equal parts white glue and water or ModPodge
paintbrushes

Have the students brush the glue/water on the jar. They
should then cover the jar with the tissue paper squares,
overlapping the squares. When the jar is covered, they can
brush another coat of glue/water (lightly, because the paper
will disintegrate if its too wet), and then cover it with a
second
layer of paper. Brush a third coat of glue/water and let
dry. After it was dry, I coverered the rim ofthe jar with
decorative fabric braiding, or ribbon, and attached it with
a hot glue gun. Insert one votive candle. Looks real
pretty!!

The second craft may take a little longer and sound more
complicated but my third graders had no problem with it.

Foam Heart Flowerpot
Materials:
a small size flowerpot for each student (at the craft store
I purchased flowerpots for 49 cents each...don't know what
size they were but you can judge)
red and white foam sheets (don't know what the stuff is
called but it's east to cut with scissors)
pipecleaners (green)
heart buttons
styrofoam balls that fit into the flower pot
Spanish moss
wrapping paper
glitter
glue/water or ModPodge and paintbrushes

Here's what to do:

You can either cut up the wrapping paper into squares or you
can cut a piece big enough to go around the flower pot. If
you make one piece, you will need to make a template so you
know the size and shape of the paper so that it completely
covers the pot. Have the students cover the pot with the
glue/water and then apply the wrapping paper, making sure to
cover the bottom. I did not cover the rim, but you could if
you wanted to. Cover with another coat of glue/water and
let dry.

Draw a heart (I used a pattern so it would look good) on the
red foam, and a smaller heart on the white foam. If you cut
with pinking shears it gives a decorative edge. Take a pipe
cleaner and push through the middle of both hearts...the
white will be on top the the red heart. Thread a heart
button
on the pipe cleaner and then thread the end of the pipe
cleaner through the other button hole, back through the two
hearts, and twist under the red heart.

Put a coat of glue/water on the rim, if you did not cover
with paper, and then sprinkle on glitter. Let dry.

Take the styrofoam ball and put into the dried pot. You
might want to secure with hot glue, but it seems to be a
snug fit. Take the pipecleaner stem with the heart
"flowers" and push it into the styrofoam ball, adjusting the
stem and the flower to your liking. Cover the styrofoam
ball with
Spanish moss.

I've used this for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. It
sounds like a lot of work, but it was one of the children's
favorite crafts.
