I would recommend Louis Sachar (Wayside School series); Roald Dahl
(begin with The Twits, or The BFG), Dick King Smith (Babe, Cuckoo
Child); Sid Fleischman's McBroom series (they are being rereleased in
pbk to look more like beginning chapter books); Elizabeth Levy's
Something Queer series.
