Last summer, remembering fondly many summers past spent reading Casper, Wendy the Witch, The Archies, and Polka Dot, I started my quest for the comic book. Here's what I found: - The "golden age of comic books" is over and hit its peak in the '60's/ '70's. - Marvel Comics is still operation and produces Batman, Superman, X-Men, and the like. -Harvey Comics, which were my personal faves, puts out a magazine occasionally. -Most chain bookstores (Barnes and Nobel, Borders) carry comic novels, but not comic books. -Archies comics come in a Reader's-Digest-size book and can be purchased at Wal-Mart. -Books-a-Million carries comic books, most are based on television (Animaniacs, The Jetson's, Scooby Doo), and most have a subscription card inside. -Some Toy R Us stores have a comics section in the action figures aisle. Most of the comic books there are the Marvel/ scary / dark type. -For $12-$20, you can order a year's subscription of most comics using the subscription card. I had no luck ordering current comics online. -Amazon.com will try to order back issues of comic books (like the Casper the Friendly Ghost ones from one or two decades ago). Just do a search for the titles you want and place your special order. -I have seen classic novels retold in comic book form, but I have never ordered them myself. Hope this helps!
