Checking out Books

My comments:
   At the second semester of 2nd grade, we take several weeks in which I
assign the students a section of the library to "explore."  THey have to
check out one book from that area that week.  This eventually gets every
child to explore every section.  I talk about the section briefly and
then let them browse for a book.  In 3rd grade we do extensive work on
learning to read call numbers and find books.  Each week they practice
the skill by replacing the book on the shelf in the correct place.
......I really think that the 5th grade will give you grief, or they
will feel very negative about being forced to check out in a specific
area.
