One solution I have arrived at to great advantage -- I no longer charge for lost or damaged books, but ask the parent and student to replace the volume with one of equal or greater value from their own collections at home. Guilt works. I have already had ten books replace one. Only requirement is that the books be in suitable condition and age appropriate. I get final refusal or acceptance on replacements offered. Might work for some of you on occasion.
