This is an important issue to fight. I have had four book challenges in the past two school years. Three of those have been from the same mother. My building is 2nd - 8thgrade. Right now, The Dark is Rising is being challenged. Are we to let every student be dictated by the choices of one parent? I think not. This is a public school. We have to meet the needs of all of our students. Blessedly, the Cedar Rapids Community School District has a wonderful committee in place. It meets on a regular basis, challenges or not. It is made up of media specialists, parents and teachers. It takes the heat away from the teachers involved and decisions are made calmly and rationally based on the merits of the book. Just because we are a school environment does not mean that we should not fight our student's right for intellectual freedom. Thanks for letting me sound off.
